Jason Wright to Transition to Senior Adviser Role Following 2024 Season
Jason Wright, the influential leader behind the Washington Commanders' transformative journey since 2020, will transition from his current role after the 2024 season. Stepping into a new position as a senior adviser, Wright’s primary focus will be to ensure the completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal—a critical project for the franchise's future.
"Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," said Wright, reflecting on his upcoming lighter role while still committed to the stadium project that has long been in the works.
A Journey of Transformation
Wright assumed the presidency of the Washington Football Team at a tumultuous time in 2020. Just two years into his tenure, in 2022, the franchise rebranded to the Washington Commanders, a significant move overseen by Wright. This period also saw the transfer of ownership from Dan Snyder to Josh Harris, adding another layer of complexity and opportunity to Wright's leadership journey.
During his presidency, Wright became a historic figure as the first Black president of an NFL team and only the fourth former player to assume such a role. This achievement highlights his extraordinary contributions both on and off the field. Although facing numerous obstacles, he remained a stabilizing force for the organization. Under his guidance, the Commanders re-established a culture of respect within the organization and reconnected with the community, corporate partners, and a growing fan base.
"I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it. We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership. Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community," Wright stated.
Eyes on Green Bay
As Jason Wright prepares to take on his new advisory role, he is also a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers. This potential new role indicates the high regard in which he is held across the NFL, reflecting his impact and success with the Commanders.
Wright expressed his gratitude and excitement for the future, "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold."
Legacy and Future Impact
Jason Wright’s tenure with the Commanders leaves a legacy of resilience, transformation, and progress. His efforts have paved the way for a future filled with promise under new ownership, and his forthcoming role as senior adviser underscores his ongoing commitment to the franchise’s growth. As the Commanders move forward with their plans for a new stadium, Wright's experience and leadership will be instrumental in navigating the complexities of this substantial undertaking.
Wright's journey from former NFL player to the first Black president of an NFL team and now a candidate for the presidency of another storied franchise demonstrates his exceptional capabilities and the respect he commands within the league. His career serves as an inspiration, setting a precedent for future leaders in the sports industry.
