Former Steelers Wide Receivers Making Headlines

Several former wide receivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently under the spotlight due to recent developments in their careers. The past week has brought significant changes for these players, notably JuJu Smith-Schuster, Martavis Bryant, and Chase Claypool.

Smith-Schuster Released by Patriots

JuJu Smith-Schuster's stint with the New England Patriots has come to an abrupt end as the team released him on Tuesday. Smith-Schuster, who had just joined the Patriots, now finds himself in search of another team that can make use of his talents. This departure marks another chapter in the journeyman's career, which has seen him bounce from the Steelers to the Kansas City Chiefs, and most recently, the Patriots.

Washington Adds Speed with Bryant

In a bid to strengthen their receiving corps, the Washington Commanders have signed Martavis Bryant. Known for his speed and big-play potential, Bryant has piqued the interest of the Commanders who are looking to add depth and versatility to their offensive lineup. The addition of Bryant is a strategic move aimed at enhancing their aerial attack and providing their quarterback with a reliable deep threat.

Claypool's Injury Woes Continue

On the injury front, the Buffalo Bills have placed Chase Claypool on injured reserve due to a toe injury he sustained on July 28. Initially described as "day-to-day" by head coach Sean McDermott, the severity of Claypool's injury has since raised concerns that he might miss the entire 2024 season. Reflecting on the situation, McDermott stated, “It's a shame because [some new players have] missed a considerable amount of time – Chase being one of them.”

The injury is a significant setback for Claypool, who had shown promise during spring practices with the Bills. McDermott has praised the 26-year-old wide receiver, saying, “It's just hard to evaluate when the players aren't out there, whether it's Chase or anybody.” He added, “And I know he's fighting like crazy to get back, and we're anxious to have him back.”

Claypool, a second-round pick by the Steelers in the 2020 NFL Draft, made an immediate impact during his rookie season, scoring 11 touchdowns and becoming the first rookie in Steelers franchise history to score four touchdowns in a single game. However, his production has waned since. In 2021, he managed only two touchdown catches and was eventually traded to the Chicago Bears before the 2022 trade deadline.

His performance with the Bears and subsequently the Miami Dolphins left much to be desired, as he caught only one touchdown while with Pittsburgh and just eight of 21 targets during his time with the Bears and Dolphins last year.

Despite these challenges, the Buffalo Bills had high hopes for Claypool. “I think he's come in and done all that we could have asked to this point,” McDermott said. “He's been a good teammate, worked hard, been focused, made plays out there and I think that'll continue as we move forward.” The hope is that Claypool can make a full recovery and return to the field stronger. McDermott concluded, “We're happy to have him.”

Buffalo Bills' Trade Moves

In a significant trade move, the Buffalo Bills have sent Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. This decision indicates a new direction for the Bills' receiving unit and could imply more opportunities for other receivers to step up in the absence of their star wideout.

Claypool, having earned praise during the spring practices, is seen as an integral part of this renewed strategy. If he can overcome his injury hurdles, he has the potential to fill some of the void left by Diggs' departure. Ensuring Claypool’s health and readiness remains a priority for the team as they navigate the upcoming season.

All eyes will certainly be on these former Steelers wide receivers as they navigate through their latest career challenges and opportunities. For Smith-Schuster, it’s a quest for a new home; for Bryant, a chance to prove his worth in Washington; and for Claypool, a battle against the clock to reclaim his form and continue his promising career in Buffalo.
