Emmitt Smith Voices Concerns Over Cowboys' Management

Emmitt Smith, a legendary figure in Dallas Cowboys history, has recently voiced critical concerns about the current state of the team. At 55 years old and nearly two decades into retirement, Smith's insights carry weight, particularly as they pertain to the management of key players, including Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

The Hall of Fame running back did not mince words when discussing the perceived mishandlings by the Cowboys' front office. Smith emphasized the value of CeeDee Lamb, who is currently holding out due to contract issues. "He is a very, very valuable asset to the Dallas Cowboys. He is a very, very valuable asset to Dak Prescott. Without him on the football field, they're putting all of the pressure on Dak Prescott now. And that is unacceptable," Smith stated.

Smith's concerns stretch beyond Lamb's situation. He expressed clear discontent with how the organization has positioned Dak Prescott, who is playing under the final year of his contract. "He should be in a position, as your franchise quarterback, he should be in a position to be successful. And right now you putting him behind the eight ball. And that is not right," Smith opined.

Smith’s dissatisfaction extends to the broader landscape of the Cowboys' recent performances. Despite repeatedly making it to the playoffs, the Cowboys have not secured a Super Bowl win in over two decades, a fact that weighs heavily on Smith and the Cowboys’ avid fanbase. "Over the last 20-some odd years, watching our team get to the playoffs time and time again, being told that we're going to do better. This is going to be a Super Bowl year for us. And we just get completely let down," Smith lamented.

Strategic Missteps

Pointing to what he perceives as systemic issues within the organization, Smith urged a thorough reassessment of the franchise's mission and alignment. "We have to try, as an organization, we have to go and do a complete assessment in terms of the organization itself. What is our mission? And how does our mission align with the football team?" he questioned. Smith suggested that despite the appearance of alignment, there may be underlying disconnects hampering the team’s success. "On the surface we would think everything is in alignment. But to me, I think there's a little disconnect there. And we need to resolve that fairly quickly because 20-some odd years, man, that's a long time," he said.

The Cowboys' current roster situation only exacerbates Smith's concerns. With Tony Pollard’s departure via free agency, the team is heavily relying on running back Ezekiel Elliott. Furthermore, Brandin Cooks has stepped into the role as the No. 2 wideout, but the absence of Lamb and the uncertainty surrounding Prescott's future present undeniable challenges.

A Call to Action

Smith’s remarks come at a critical juncture for the Cowboys, who must navigate contract negotiations, roster stability, and strategic alignment to break their decades-long Super Bowl drought. His perspective, forged through years of exceptional play and intimate knowledge of the franchise’s inner workings, serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and pressures faced by one of the NFL's most storied teams.

As the Cowboys' management looks ahead, the guidance and critiques offered by icons like Emmitt Smith are invaluable. Will they heed his call for deeper organizational introspection and better player management? Only time will tell if America's Team can rise to the challenge and reclaim its former glory on the NFL's biggest stage.
