Commanders Training Camp: Intensity Heats Up as Players Shine Under Pressure
As the Commanders' training camp marches forward, the focus on fine-tuning skills becomes even more pronounced, with a particular emphasis placed on red-zone work. The sixth day of camp, which featured the third practice session with enthusiastic fans in attendance and the second day in full pads, provided a glimpse into the burgeoning chemistry and development among the players.
One of the standout performers has been Jayden Daniels, who has been splitting first-team reps with Marcus Mariota. Throughout the 11-on-11 sessions, Daniels showcased his arm strength and precision, hitting Olamide Zaccheaus with a deep ball up the right sideline and connecting with Jahan Dotson along the sideline.
Daniels also exhibited his ability to spread the ball around, making a solid throw to Terry McLaurin up the opposite sideline. The final team session highlighted Daniels' potential as he found Dotson and completed a touchdown pass to Zach Ertz. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Daniels, who experienced a bungled handoff with Jeremy McNichols and a series of missed throws in a row, underscoring the growing pains typical at this stage of camp.
Brandon Coleman Steps Up
Another player making a significant impact is Brandon Coleman, who has been showcasing his versatility by playing with both the first and second teams at left and right tackle. Coleman faced stiff competition from veterans Dorance Armstrong Jr., Dante Fowler Jr., and Clelin Ferrell, gaining valuable experience in the process.
"There's always like three points in my brain that I'm telling myself in the next period if I didn't do it well. Like today, it was my hands were pretty bad in the first period. I was like, 'Work on my hands, work on my balance, keep my chest up,'" Coleman explained. His commitment to continuous improvement is evident as he navigates the challenges of facing seasoned defensive linemen. "D-linemen in the league have a bunch of secondary and third moves. Their knowledge of what o-linemen do is so vast compared to college… That's stuff that I just have to engrain in my brain, like shit's not over until the whistle blows."
Defensive Standouts Spotlight
On the defensive side, Mike Sainristil has been a constant presence with the starting unit, also contributing significantly in the return game. His relentless effort and work ethic are embodied in his words: "Part of it is just my play style. I'm a guy that's gonna go hard until the whistle's blown. And then the second part of it is just getting myself to make that second nature for me, so that when it comes game time, I don’t even have to think about stuff like that."
Jer'Zhan Newton received his first taste of first-team reps during this camp and capitalized on the opportunity. Newton made an immediate impact by forcing McNichols to cut back during a play, demonstrating his ability to disrupt the offense.
The defensive line found additional support from K.J. Henry and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, both of whom made their presence felt during practice, adding depth and vigor to the defensive unit.
Special Teams Precision
Kicker Ramiz Ahmed has been nearly flawless, not missing any field goals during the team portion of Tuesday's practice. Ahmed's consistency extended to long-range attempts, hitting field goals from as far as 51 yards with plenty of distance, instilling confidence in the special teams unit.
Offensive Sparks and Room for Growth
Dotson has emerged as one of the most consistent performers in camp, attributing his progress to increased comfort and confidence. "I feel like I'm just getting more comfortable, and that's enabling me to play faster and faster. That's been a big emphasis for me," Dotson shared. His chemistry with Daniels is evident, as seen in multiple successful connections during practice.
Tremayne, another receiver vying for attention, made two impressive downfield catches from Mariota after an early drop, showcasing his potential to become a reliable target.
While there have been mistakes and missed opportunities, the Commanders' training camp has provided a platform for players to refine their skills, face high-level competition, and prepare for the season ahead. With intensity high and competition fierce, each practice offers valuable lessons and highlights the potential within the roster.
