Comcast and Diamond Sports Group Reach New Carriage Deal, Restoring Bally Sports Channels for Fans

After a protracted period of negotiations and a blackout that spanned several months, Comcast and Diamond Sports Group have successfully reached a new carriage agreement. This resolution comes as welcome news to many sports fans who have been missing out on their favorite local teams' broadcasts.

The blackout, which began at the start of May, deprived Comcast customers access to Bally Sports channels. These channels are home to a plethora of local sports content, including live games from MLB, NBA, and NHL teams. With the new deal in place, Xfinity customers will once again have the opportunity to view their favorite local teams, starting from the beginning of August.

David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group, acknowledged the significance of the agreement by stating, "Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity."

The new deal is particularly important in light of Diamond Sports Group's ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, which have now been in progress for the past 16 months. The company has been actively working to navigate these financial difficulties while continuing to provide regional sports content under the Bally Sports banner. Diamond Sports Group currently owns 15 regional sports networks and holds linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams.

Enhanced Viewing Options for Fans

Fans residing in markets where Comcast has a strong presence, such as Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami, can once again tune in to watch their local teams. Xfinity customers who subscribe to the "Ultimate TV" package will have exclusive access to live MLB, NBA, and NHL games. This package offers a comprehensive sports viewing experience and provides a three-month free trial period before incurring an additional $20 per month fee. Customers have until August 30 to upgrade to the "Ultimate TV" package.

Additionally, Bally Sports' streaming app continues to be available as an in-market viewing option for fans of teams such as the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers. However, fans following the Braves and Twins will need to rely on the broadcast channels for their local game coverage.

Looking Ahead

Diamond Sports Group is not just content with re-establishing carriage agreements; they are also focused on securing deals with major sports leagues. "With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA," Preschlack confirmed. These agreements are crucial with the basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching.

The resolution of these negotiations is pivotal for Diamond Sports Group’s larger strategic goals. Preschlack elaborated, "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court."

Despite the challenges posed by bankruptcy, Diamond Sports Group is intent on navigating these issues and solidifying its position in the sports broadcasting landscape. The new carriage deal with Comcast marks a significant milestone in this journey, ensuring that sports fans can once again enjoy uninterrupted coverage of their favorite local teams.
